What is the difference between 2.0 and 2.5 reservoir shocks? ›

The biggest difference is body size, oil volume, and piston size. With a larger surface area for the working piston, the 2.5 shock just has to do much less work over identical terrain compared to the 2.0. This translates to a smoother feel on bumps, not so jolty.

Both are extremely strong and durable for on-road and off-road use. Fox and King differ in the oil used. They both use conventional shock oil, but Fox's oil is rated at up to 400F with a viscosity rating of 370. King uses oil rated at up to 230F with a viscosity rating of 170.

First, a remote reservoir shock can hold more shock oil since there is no longer a free-floating piston and gas charge taking up space inside of the shock body. Secondly, the remote reservoir (and even the reservoir hose) act as heat dissipators helping to get rid of excess heat.

The Fox 2.0 IFP is a 2" aluminum bodied shock, which resist corrosion a little better than the Rancho steel body, meaning the Fox aluminum body does better on the east coast with all that salt.

Durability: Some riders feel that the durability of RockShox components is not quite as high as that of Fox, particularly for aggressive or high-mileage riding. Refinement: While RockShox offers great performance, some riders find that Fox shocks have a slightly more refined feel, particularly at the high end.

2.0 and 2.5 refers to the diameter of the shock body. The 2.5 holds more oil, so as to stay cooler longer.

FoX shocks should be left at the factory setting of 200 psi of nitrogen. The nitrogen charge in the shock is to pressurize the internal floating piston (IFP) and avoid cavitation. Tuning should be performed through spring rates or shock valving changes and not with changes in nitrogen pressure.

For 2.5" of lift, if you're running 31" or 32" tires, 13.5" compressed length front shocks will work nicely. 13.5" compressed length rear shocks will as well, and require 1.25" of rear bumpstop extension.

Fox feels more plush and is just a more comfortable/softer shock, which definitely has its benefits; quieting down trail chatter, subduing rough terrain, eating up poor roads. Bilstein's longevity is legendary, and will outlast a Fox 2.0 shock by 2x or 3x the miles.
