Celebrating creativity that drives progress through Deeper Cultural insights. As one of the jury members for Cannes Lions 2023, my takeout of this year's awards is more rewarding but also more fulfilling this time around, as my view of the entries was more multi-dimensional. The view of understanding the process and work on a deeper level by mere discussion, “understanding” and, most importantly, context. Understanding is underrated, contextual, cultural, creative, socio-political and spiritual understanding.Understanding is so underrated in how we view concepts, constructs and messaging and in some instances, the lack of context and understanding saw certain work awarded while being tone deaf; in others, work was awarded for being clear and sensitive to cultural, racial and spiritual context, and understanding. The clear Devide in my view will not be the norm going forward as Deeper Cultural insight will take precedent. In my view and opinion, this is the new trend that will set good work apart from great work in the time to come. I found the awards and festival to be a success, with a much more visible level of inclusion most noticeably by the attendance, participation and influence of people of colour –meaning Africans – and from across the diaspora compared to my previous attendance at Cannes Lions. From the music, to sub-cultural and gender-focused gatherings and events, it was reassuring to see the connections Africans intentionally made this year, with initiatives such as Black At Cannes and other similar initiatives. It was clear that “CULTURE” was a big tick box for the Cannes Lions Team. The participation of the black elite, such as the great social and cultural influencer Spike Lee and culture-current and trending Issa Rae, created that “cultural” impact, but did it really? At face value, it seems to have worked, but only time will tell. One of the highlights for me was the First Nigerian Gold Cannes Lion win by an independent, 100% black-owned agency, and another highlight was engaging with one of my childhood heroes – the great Spike Lee, who indirectly influenced my thinking as a young man. The takeout again is the value that a deeper cultural understanding will be the driver of great creative work in 2024. God willing, I’ll be there next year to see it in practice. Bad times for culture in Spain and it's getting worseThe newcommers of politics are messing with culture more than ever. Freedom of speach and the necessary independence of culture are at great risk in a country, Spain, where right wing parties and petty tyrants have been voted to rule. Their lack of knowledge or their political agenda are having an impact of key cultural projects. The first red alert arrived some days ago, when one of landamrk festivals of sound, visual and digital-performative arts of Catalonia, Eufònic (recently awarded on of the National Culture Awards 2023 of Catalonia), was cancelled by the new mayor of the hosting city La Ràpita. Read the official statement released by the festival: https://lnkd.in/exNhJCjh Following this, in a very short period of times, we have heard news of performances cancelled by local authorities. https://lnkd.in/etK3zKjH All with deplorable excuses from the poltitians. All with a common thread (the vetos come from the new rulers of small/mid-size villages ruled by the right and extreme right of Partido Popular and VOX). The perspective is not good if the tendency is not stopped at the next general election. Soon, the cultural sector of Spain will have to raise its voice with energy. Now, it's time that the news are spread from country to country, to ask the key cultural institutions and organisations to sound the red alert.

The show will go on.With the news of Bell seemingly ending its long-standing sponsorship of the festival, compounded by potential implications of the ongoing Hollywood strikes, the Toronto International Film Festival is facing resilient times. But what is it that they say?Something about ‘tough times never lasting but tough people do’?While I can never seem to get those anecdotes completely right, the sentiment is clear. And TIFF is definitely ‘tough people’!How tough?Well…🏠 TIFF is a top property in Ontario: An engagement base of 40% of consumers in Ontario places TIFF in the top 10% of sports, music, lifestyle, and causal properties (ranks 41 out of 792)🍁 TIFF reaches well beyond the Ontario border: 7.14MM (29%) Canadians engage with TIFF annually, well over half residing outside of Ontario (4.1MM).⭐ TIFF reaches well beyond the Canadian border:TIFF also reaches 1 in 4 (28%) Americans, with 23MM+ frequent festival followers.🌍 TIFF reaches well beyond the North American border: Since 2019, TIFF has shown significant engagement growth in many European countries, most notable being UK, France, and Germany. TIFF’s strength and status with consumers, nationally and internationally, will be the fuel that powers the property forward. Wishing all involved the best of luck with the upcoming festival (Thu, Sep 7, 2023 – Sun, Sep 17, 2023)…break a leg!#toughtimesdontlast #toughpeopledo #tiff23

Culture Moves EuropeCultural mobility has always been an engine of creativity, a way for artists to be inspired and grow. Mobility and exchanges foster diversity andinnovation. This is the idea behind theCommission’s #CreativeEurope programme, which funds cross-border cooperation in culture. We took this programme one step further as we launchedCulture Moves Europelast year, the largest European mobility scheme for artists and cultural professionals. Be it in the field of architecture, cultural heritage, design, fashion, literature, music, visual or performing arts, with a budget of EUR 21 million for the period 2022-2025 under Creative Europe, artists and cultural professionals can now receive funds to gain international experience and make their work known outside their home country. As part of the individual mobility actions, artists and cultural professionals can carry out a project with a partner of their choice in another one of the 40 Creative Europe countries. And through the residency actions, organisations can receive financial resources to host artists and cultural professionals. I encourage all artists and cultural professionals to participate in the second round of calls we have launched this week.Find out everything there is to know about both types of grants: individual mobilities and residency hosts👉 https://europa.eu/!mj4Ww6.#PushBoundaries
