History. The mall opened in November 2001, originally as an outlet mall, but began to evolve into an entertainment mall, with the additions of AMC Sugarloaf Mills 18 on December 17, 2003, and Medieval Times on July 21, 2006.
Along with the King of Prussia mall, Simon has control of Pennsylvania's two largest malls. On September 16, 2014, Simon Property Group renamed the mall from Franklin Mills to Philadelphia Mills.
Sugarloaf Mountain is famous for its unique dome shape, its breathtaking panoramic views of Rio de Janeiro, and the exciting cable car journey to its summit, making it a symbol of the city's natural beauty.
Its demise is a story of poor management. After a couple of bad winters, it defaulted on loans and the bank took over, eventually selling to John Sills in 1981. In 1997, the bank reacquired Sugar Loaf and sold it to hotelier Remo Polselli. Polselli ran Sugar Loaf until it closed.
Sugarloaf Mills is Georgia's largest value shopping, entertainment, and dining destination. At over 1 million square feet, Sugarloaf Mills is a wonderful climate-controlled indoor mall with stores ranging from children's apparel to the latest shoes to sporting goods.
The entrance to the former Gwinnett Place Mall has been shuttered since Gwinnett County bought the majority of the mall property last year. Plans are still underway to redevelop the site, and the head of the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District says redevelopment will likely take years to complete.
The county purchased the 39-acre site in 2020. They will now partner with CBRE to turn the property into a “dense, mixed-use activity center that is well connected, green and walkable, while preserving the cultural diversity and character of the area.”
A few years back, California lawyer and property owner Jeff Katofsky purchased the decaying property with hopes of developing it back to something big. Reports had said his original plan was to salvage the resort building, but years of vandalism have damaged it beyond repair.
